The Digest
📆October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month
The City of Belleville is celebrating National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) in October to promote disability inclusion in the workplace. From Oct. 21 to 27, key landmarks will be lit in blue and purple. A 2022 survey showed 27% of Canadians aged 15+ have disabilities, with only 62% of those aged 25-64 employed, compared to 78% without disabilities. NDEAM aims to highlight the benefits of hiring people with disabilities. Local resources include the Ontario Disability Employment Network, the Conference Board of Canada’s Employer Toolkit, and Jobs Ability. Learn more here.
🏡North Belleville Subdivision Proposal
Developers have proposed a 93-unit subdivision, Towncentre Place, west of Highway 62. The project includes various housing types and commercial units, with prices from $580K to $615K. Belleville planning staff are gathering feedback, particularly on traffic concerns. A public meeting revealed mixed reactions, with some residents worried about increased traffic. The city, however, predicts minimal impact. The development will feature rental units, a small parkette, and a trail linking to Settlers Ridge East. Read more here.

Business Spotlight
🇺🇦 The Kafana
📍 199 Front St, Belleville
BoQ foodies - we’ve got a great new spot in downtown Belleville. The Kafana is now open! Currently, they are serving a “mini menu” with hours from Wednesday to Saturday, 11 AM until late, and Sunday brunch from 10 AM to 2 PM. It looks like the menu will feature modern European and Mediterranean cuisine, including vegetarian options. The atmosphere is very warm and inviting, making it a great spot for a casual meal, date night, or a special occasion. The pierogies are amazing (try the dessert pierogies on the Quintelicious menu). Wash it all down with a traditionally made Turkish coffee. They also serve a selection of European liquor, beer, and wine (Croatian, Bulgarian, Georgian, and more!). They will have a grand opening in a few weeks once the full menu is ready (we’ll let you know all about it). Fun fact: Kafana is a Balkan term for a bistro or tavern serving traditional cuisine. Here’s the mini menu and some food pics:
