Hastings County Boosts Child Care Funding

Wondering about the status of the $10/day daycare? Hastings County is making significant strides in supporting child-care services with a major funding increase. Director Jamie Lynne Osmond reports that the county’s allocation has grown from approximately $30 million to $42 million, aiming to stabilize the sector and reduce child-care costs for families.

What You Need to Know:

  • Base fees for child care through the Canada-Wide Early Learning and Child Care (CWELCC) program have dropped to $22/day starting January 1.

  • By the year 2026, child-care costs are expected to drop to an average of $10/day per child.

  • Hastings County is working toward creating 828 new child-care spaces by 2026.

With this increased support, child-care providers can better manage costs and continue offering high-quality care for families in the region. Full story here. The Intel

Project Lifesaver Saves the Day in Quinte West

Crisis averted with great technology. A 67-year-old man with dementia was safely rescued by Quinte West OPP on January 15, 2025, thanks to the Project Lifesaver program. The man, wearing a radio frequency bracelet provided by the program, was found within 10 minutes of officers arriving on the scene, roughly one kilometer from his home. He had become stuck in a wooded area, and hypothermia was setting in. After assessment by paramedics, he was returned to his family. Full story InQuinte

Waring’s Creek Developments

Packed with locals, Waring Hall hosted a passionate discussion led by the Waring’s Creek Improvement Association about proposed developments near Sandy Hook Road. Experts warn these projects could devastate the region's only cold-water creek, reversing 32 years of restoration. WCIA urges action to protect this vital watershed. Full story here. CountyLive
